A parish which was entrusted to the Salesians over ten years ago, has marked 60 years since it began as a separate parish. A special anniversary Mass was celebrated on the First Sunday of Advent, 30 November, in St.Aloysius Church, Richmond SA, followed by a morning tea and a book launch.
For the Golden Jubilee 1954-2004, Father Brendan Murphy SDB and parishioner Correnna Sheehy produced a commemorative book of memories of past and present members of St.Aloysius Parish. The substance of the book was the extensive collection of interviews conducted and transcribed by Father Brendan. After the fifty years celebration, Fr.Brendan continued with the oral history work. He kindly provided his materials and his permission to use them for the 60 years celebration this year in 2014.
The anniversary committee consisted of Carmel Hyland, Lorraine Lienert Margo Canino, Jill Gallio, and John Mahoney. They collected more stories, and Correnna Sheehy once again was instrumental in preparing the book for the printer. The occasion is best described by John Mahoney, long-time parishioner and co-chair of the Parish Pastoral Council and Chair of the Parish Finance Council:
For an occasion such as this it is appropriate that a few words be spoken. Some months ago it occurred to the members on the parish council that this year, 2014, is the 60th anniversary of the parish which was officially proclaimed as a parish early in 1954 with the appointment of Father Denis Donovan as its first parish priest. As will be seen in the booklet, between 1932 when the foundation stone was laid and 1954 the parish had been under the pastoral care of Thebarton Parish.
Fast forward to the recent year (or so it seems!) of 2004, Fr Nick Castelyns and Fr Brendan Murphy encouraged us to celebrate the golden jubilee 50 years. And quite a number of us can remember the celebration we had, quite similar to this one—early December and very warm as I remember. We assembled after mass on the lawn as it was then, but now the area is taken up by the adventure playground of our parish school.
But now a further 10 years has slipped by and it gives us the opportunity to have another celebration – for the diamond jubilee – 60 years Because we felt that we should be realistic- though some of us are enjoying longevity,- the chances are that to be present at the 75 year mark may be questionable! So the parish council, in conjunction with Fr Joe agreed that 60 years would be an appropriate milestone at this stage. On behalf of our sub-committee responsible for putting on this celebration, I wish to acknowledge those who have contributed their family stories for the second edition of the parish booklet. Thank you everyone for responding to a little humorous urging to tell of your experiences here in the Richmond area.
St.Aloysius Parish was amalgamated with St.John Bosco Parish, Brooklyn Park, in 2008. We congratulate all past and present members of St.Aloysius community at Richmond.
