An intimate gathering of Salesians, staff and friends was held in the Smoking Room at Rupertswood Mansion in Sunbury at 11:00 AM on Saturday 17th June to mark the 90th Anniversary of Fr Michael Maiocco’s first Mass at the property.
The original group of Salesians took up the residence at Rupertswood on 16th June 1927 to begin their work in education for the young. On the following morning, they celebrated their first Mass to acknowledge God’s blessing and to thank Him for many years of ministry to come for the young.
Yet, it was a different group on 17th June 2017. The provincial, Fr Greg Chambers SDB, celebrated the Eucharist while the rector of Rupertswood, Fr Will Matthews SDB, preached the homily to mark the 90th anniversary of the first Mass. They were joined by a few distinguished Salesians, the principal of the college and the REC, a few key staff members, some parent representatives and a couple of family friends.
Fr Greg Chambers welcomed and thanked the invited guests not only for their presence but also for their contributions to the life of the college. He also spoke about the impressive characteristics of Fr Michael Maiocco.
In his homily, Fr Will recounted the famous life of Fr Michael Maiocco who came all the way from Italy via the United States with his smile and many talents. Fr Will also thanked all invited guests for their unique contributions to Salesian College Sunbury, and their continued support.
Following the Eucharist, the guests gathered in the mansion dining room to share many great memories of the past 90 years of Salesian presence in Sunbury over a light lunch.
A whole school Mass with Archbishop Denis Hart is being organized for Wednesday 13th September 2017 for 90 years of our Salesian presence in Sunbury. All Salesians are warmly invited to come along.
