Students in Visual Art classes at Xavier College in Gawler, South Australia have been spending time working with well known South Australian artist Sophie Hann. Sophie started at Xavier in the artist in residence program late in Term 3 for two days every week and has worked with students in classes, worked with students to produce a community art work and produced an example of her own work for the school inspired by the work of Don Bosco.
Students from all year levels have enjoyed and been inspired by Sophie’s presence in their classroom. She has shown them the process she undertakes when she produces an art work and worked with different media and techniques that students then used in their own work. In addition Sophie assisted a dedicated
and committed group of students to produce an artwork based on the flora and fauna of the local area. This work consists of individual panels which come together to form one cohesive work.
Finally, as part of the program Sophie produced an art work that will remain the property of the school entitled “Children in the River”. Sophie researched the work of Don Bosco and interpreted how he inspired a love of learning in young people.
