All Rectors and two Priests-in-Charge from the Australia-Pacific Province of Mary Help of Christians gathered at the Province Centre in Ascot Vale, near Melbourne for their biannual gathering on 20th – 21st September.
On the first day, the main items presented and discussed were the report from the provincial, child protection policy and the formation matters. This first day was concluded with a communal Mass led by Fr Taisale Leluai, the Rector and Novice Master from the Fiji Islands. In his homily, he encouraged all rectors to be brave missionaries like the Korean martyrs celebrated for the day.
On the second day, the rectors and the leaders of the province openly discussed on a few issues affecting the province and the wellbeing of all confrere. Fr. Phil Gleeson reported on the state of formation in the province. At midday, Fr Provincial led the Eucharist during which he encouraged all leaders of the province to continue the good work in their respective communities and works. He highlighted the call of Matthew the tax collector who left everything to follow Jesus amidst his imperfection.
In the afternoon sessions, Fr Bernie Graham gave an update on professional standards among priests and religious in Australia, Fr Will Matthews reported on the works of the Social Communications in the province, and Fr Anthony Quang invited all community leader to support the migrants and refugees in Australia and New Zealand.
The biannual meeting was concluded at 3:00 PM with a prayer specially prepared by Fr Frank Bertagnolli. Before each confrere went their own way home, Fr Greg Chambers thanked all participants for their time, generosity, participation and leadership in the province, and beyond.
