Burmese Catholics’ Family Day at Sunbury

A group of Burmese migrants from the Myanmar Catholic Community in Melbourne gathered for their annual general meeting, a family day and a communal Eucharist on Saturday 18th June at Salesian College in Sunbury.

The day began with a tour around the college led by the Rector, some fun games led by the Burmese seminarians from Corpus Christi College in Carlton, and a shared lunch together as the sharing of a variety of tasty food became the main attraction of the day.

A Kachin Franciscan, Sr. Patricia, and Fr. Wilbert Mireh SJ, a Kayah priest who is studying Education in Melbourne, also joined in the celebrations of the day.

Following the fun activities, annual general meeting was held during which the past Executive Members presented their reports to the community and in turn received thanks and appreciations from the community for the leadership.

The election for new Executive members was held and the new positions were distributed to Mr Maryoe, Elizabeth La Tsen, Julio Htay Reh, Bawk Mai, Charles Mung and Joseph Naw Aung.

The day concludes with a Mass in St John Bosco chapel in the evening. After Mass, everyone was invited to the Salesian Residence for a clean-up of all leftovers from lunch, and some social time.

Currently, the Rector of the Salesian College Community in Sunbury, Fr Will Matthews SDB, cares for the pastoral needs of the Burmese migrants in Melbourne, Adelaide, Wagga Wagga, and in New Zealand. Based in Melbourne, he visits these various places and communities during school holidays, and when needed.

Attached video is put together by Fr Wilbert Mireh SJ of the family day held at the Salesian College on 18th June.
