On 5 – 7 September, Fr Frank Freeman, Br Jeff Miller and Michael Gartland took part in the Australasia Catholic Communications Congress and the Australasia Catholic Press Council (of which Fr Frank is a life member) conference in Brisbane. The theme of the congress was “Communicating Hope and Trust”. Numerous keynote speakers, ranging from Archbishop of Melbourne Peter Comensoli, Director of Catholic News Greg Erlandson and cricketing legend, Matthew Hayden spoke to the idea that in many cases, “hope” is most useful and indeed, only really makes sense in situations that seem to be utterly hopeless.
Other keynote speakers and workshops explored the importance of storytelling and of artistic expression of story; for thousands of years the Church has been at the forefront of these yet in more recent times, has lagged well behind. If we are to be passionate about Jesus’ message, then we should be passionate about the way we communicate and present it!
Overall, the trip was a very worthy endeavour. It allowed for the flourishing of ideas and networking with other Catholic professionals working in communications around Australia-Pacific thus providing a two-fold boost for the communications capability of the Salesians in this province!
