The Salesian community in Chadstone, Victoria celebrated the big milestones of three Salesians from their community on Wednesday 13th April. Fifty years ago on this very day, Fr Frank Bertagnolli and Fr Oreste Cantamessa were ordained to the priesthood. And on 31st January 1951, Br. Joe Ellul made his First Profession as a Salesian with Br Cahill Glisner and Fr Frank Freeman.
The Eucharist to honour and acknowledge the jubilarians was held in the Chadstone community chapel. It was led by Fr Cantamessa and the homily was preached by Fr Bertagnolli. A few Salesians including the Provincial and the Vice-Provincial concelebrated and participated at the Eucharist.
Following the Eucharist, a small dinner celebration was held at the Mathew-Flinders Hotel in Chadstone. During the meal, Br Michael Harris shared some thoughts on Br Joe, Fr. Frank Freeman shared some stories about Fr Cantamessa, and Fr John Papworth unfolded the life journey of Fr Bertagnolli. The Provincial, Fr Greg Chambers, also thanked the jubilerians at the conclusion of the meal, speaking about them as the ‘stalwarts’ of the province. Rightly so, the three jubilarians have always been considered as loyal, hardworking and well-respected members of the province.
Presently, Fr Bertagnolli serves as the Rector of the college and the community, while Fr Cantamessa serves as the Bursar of the community and a teacher of the college.
Br Joe who has spent much of his life as a teacher now ministers as an Assistance at the college. He is considered as a much loved and valued member of the Salesian College community.
Congratulations to Br Joe Ellul for his Sapphire Jubilee of Salesian Life, and to Fr Oreste and Fr Bertagnolli for their Golden Jubilees of priestly ordination.
