The parish priest of Brooklyn Park and Richmond in Adelaide, Fr Joseph Lee was awarded with the Doctor of Philosophy at Adelaide Town Hall on 30th September.
Fr Joe began the doctoral studies in 1999 with an overall interest in philosophy, but with no specific branch or philosophical problem in mind. The subject of the human soul was suggested by the late and respected Jesuit priest, philosopher and teacher, Rev Dr John Begley (1921-2010). Father Begley SJ was known to many Salesians in the province, especially those who studied at Catholic Theological College.
The thesis was entitled Brain, Mind and Soul: Towards a Contemporary Catholic Understanding of the Human Soul. The thesis explores the Catholic Church’s teaching on the human soul within the context of the neurosciences and modern philosophy. It concludes that Catholic teachings on the human soul can be developed through dialogue with the sciences and modern philosophy.
The principal supervisor was Associate Professor Stephen Downs and the co-supervisor was Rev. Associate Professor Denis Edwards. Both these academics were with the School, then later, the Department of Theology at Flinders University. However, they are now on the faculty of ACU based in Adelaide.
Congratulations Dr. Joseph Lee SDB!
