Don Bosco Youth Hostel in Brooklyn Park, South Australia has closed its doors after serving the youth providing safe and family environment for them for 11 years. This closing ceremony was specially marked by a Eucharist led by Fr. Frank Moloney, provincial of the Salesians, who was concelebrated by a number of Salesian priests from the province on 11th December 2010.
Being a joint venture with the Salesian Sisters, Sr. Margaret Bentley, the provincial leader, was also present with her fellow sisters to mark the occasion. A number of Salesian Cooperators and friends of Salesians were present at the Mass to thank God for the services made through the hostel.
Fr. Moloney thanked those who have worked in the hostel from 1999: Br. Michael Harris, Sr. Jenny Doudle, Fr. Shane Reade and Sr. Patricia MacCusker during the Eucharist. He pointed out in his homily that it is not an end to youth ministry in the area. Salesians must continue to look for new frontiers to work with the youth around Brooklyn Park and beyond.
Light refreshments were served in the dining room of the hostel after the Eucharist. Fr. Shane Reade, the closing director, thanked those who have been part of the hostel as cook, cleaners and volunteers for their generous contributions over the years.
The ownership of the hostel will be transferred back to the Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide at the end of the year. We hope that the well-kept hostel will be made a good use for other charitable and Christian purposes.
