On 4th of March 2011 Don Bosco Camp Dromana was set upon by 40 young people from Salesian College Rupertswood, Dominic College Glenorchy – Tasmania, John Paul College – Frankston, St Margaret Marys Youth Group – North Brunswick, Don Bosco Camp – Dromana and Salesian College – Chadstone
Due to the overwhelming demand for participation in the December Don Bosco Leadership camp, another Leadership camp was run by a core team of 10 Senior Dromana leaders, Emily Walter, Ashley Trethowan, Lauren Hichaaba and Fr Brian Ahern. While the December camp focuses primarily on training volunteers for leadership on holiday camps, this camp focused on Salesian Leadership, in the wider sense within schools, youth centres and parishes.
Salesian Leadership may have been looked at in a broader sense; however the same fundamental elements such as Ice-breakers, Goodnights, good mornings, games, singing, and “caught not taught” elements would all be on display for the young leaders to all take on board and learn from.
The leaders would learn that they have an incredible opportunity, to get out of their comfort zone to know their classmates, become their friend, make them feel welcome and comfortable in their own skin which would not only create a more rewarding environment but have an impact far beyond what they could imagine.
This is what they would come to experience during their short weekend stay, going from a group of individuals with some common links to a bonded group who now share a special experience. This comes about because everybody is unique with their own sets of talents and personalities which make each camp different from the next.
It’s quite hard to describe what happens on a Don Bosco Camp without going through all the obvious like the fantastic food everybody enjoyed, the great new games which were played as well the favourites, not to mention the new friends made as well! What goes without saying is that everyone, each individual makes a camp what it is. So to the 40 young, enthusiastic, energetic and wonderful people who made the journey down to Dromana thankyou for stepping out of your comfort zone and being yourself, look out for them, they’ll be influencing a Salesian community near you!
