A large group of Salesians and a few diocesan clergy gathered at Salesian College in Chadstone on Monday 24th October to farewell Fr Julian Cavarzan SDB who has decided to return to his home land in Italy after 52 years of service to the Catholic Church in Melbourne.
The Mass of gratitude was led by Fr Julian, concelebrated by the provincial and the rector of his community, Fr Frank Bertagnolli. A special guest, Archbishop Timothy Costello SDB, from Perth was present at the Eucharist.
Following the Eucharist, the farewell dinner was held in the new building of the Salesian College, adjacent to the chapel, over-looking the oval and the other hill where once used to be the Salesian Provincial House and the Oakleigh Community.
During the dinner, Archbishop Costelloe, who once used to be an altar server of Fr Julian, gave a little speech thanking him and highlighting the example Fr Julian displayed in his life. The provincial, Fr Greg Chambers also spoke on behalf of the province and thanked Fr Julian for all his services to the province and to the Italian community in Clayton.
Fr Julian will be returning to Italy shortly to retire, to minister a small community, and to be with his much loved family and friends.
Farewell Don Giuliano!
