On 27 January the final meeting of the General Councils of the Salesians and the FMA was held at the Generalate of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. The Eucharist was presided over by the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez Villanueva, and concelebrated by the priest members of the SDB Council. The meeting allowed the members of the two councils to express their thanks for the gift of communion and unity of purpose in the Salesian Family, in particular in the two institutions of consecrated men and women founded directly by Don Bosco.
This was a particularly intense meeting of the General Councils of the Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, held at the FMA Generalate on the afternoon of Monday 27 January. It was a significant occasion, the last of the normal meetings before the 27th General Chapter of the Salesians which begins on 22 February next.
At the end of the Mass in the Immaculate Mary chapel, the entire community of the Generalate, with the Superior, Sister Judith Rivera, entertained the two councils with thanks expressed in word and song. The Rector Major officially introduced each of the outgoing Councillors, expressing his belief that he had worked over these years with "the best Council he could have had."
The meeting with the whole community afforded Fr Chavez an opportunity to thank all the FMA. During his two six-year terms of office he felt their constant closeness and prayers accompanying and supporting him, especially at the time of his illness. "Now,” he said, “the problem has passed and I have regained my energy and health."
The evening ended with the a speech by Mother General at the end of the meal. Reflecting on some of the significant events animated by the Rector Major in the course of these years, Mother Reungoat expressed gratitude and joy for all that the Council and the whole institute had received. The gratitude was mutual and was symbolized by the friendly exchange of gifts.
