I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the way the staff, parents, students and old scholars have accepted me at Dominic College for the past six years.
Some of you may know that I was here as Principal many years ago; and at that time we had 20 priests, brothers and sisters on the staff, with the Salesians and the Dominican Sisters in charge of the school – which was spread over three campuses, and the College went right through to Year 12.
We had approximately the same number of students as there are now, and most of them belonged to the Catholic faith…
I could not imagine then the transformation that has occurred in the past 30 years. Dominic College is a very different school today – one campus, a few religious on the staff, lay administration, the domination of technology, about half of the students belong to the Catholic faith, a greatly expanded and varied curriculum, and excellent facilities… The old scholars of my days when they see the facilities that students enjoy today remain speechless!
I hope and pray that these same old scholars would recognize that one thing has remained constant – and must remain constant into the future: the ethos, tradition, values, the dimension of the heart, the loving care and kindness, the Gospel culture, the presence… whereby Dominic College becomes a “home that welcomes”, a school where “young people learn skills for life”, a faith community where one becomes a “good Christian and an honest citizen”, and a playground where “one makes friends for life”.
Buildings and facilities – and even people – will change; the Salesian spirit must remain the same, albeit with different external expressions.
I hope I have contributed to this “spiritual” legacy in my time at Dominic College.
With my appreciation go my good wishes and prayer for all staff, parents and students, for a Happy Christmas and a Blessed New Year.
Fr Frank Bertagnolli, SDB – Rector
