The Salesians from St Marys community in New South Wales together with the parishioners from Our Lady of Rosary parish celebrated the feast of St John Bosco on Sunday, 1 February at the 10:30 am Mass.
The rector of the Salesian community, Fr. Shane Reade, was the main celebrant and homilist. He was concelebrated by Frs. Brendan Murphy, John Walenciej, Jerry Breen and Carmelo Sciberras the chaplain of the Maltese Past Pupils. The youthful Fr Guy Riolo joined in the youth choir. Fr Chris Riley, a member of this community, sent his apologies.
During the Eucharist, Fr Jerry Breen was appropriately and kindly acknowledged by his community, and parishioners for his past 7 years of dedicated service and cheerful presence. Fr Jerry will move to Lysterfield community in Victoria this year.
Fr Jerry’s contribution as an assistant priest included Masses in the parish, Emmaus College, and St Margaret Marys Gardens nursing home. He often visited the local cemetery to remember and honour past parishioners, but particularly Fr James Phelan a past parish priest of Our Lady of the Rosary for 25 years.
At the conclusion of the Eucharist, Fr Shane Reade and Mrs Stella Buhagiar paid tribute for his services to the parish and community. Fr Jerry responded with a short but moving reply.
It was very much appreciated that the Maltese, Filipino and Vietnamese Past Pupils participated joyfully in this great celebration. After Mass, there was a procession around the church with a statue of Don Bosco, which is on loan to the parish from the Maltese Past Pupils for the duration of the bicentenary celebration.
Afterwards, all gathered in the Parish hall for a light lunch, tea and coffee. Fr Jerry was the recipient of a large cake and congratulations from all present. And again Fr Jerry thanked those present for making his time among them very enjoyable.
As Fr Jerry would often reply…. Praise the Lord!
Happy Bicentenary of St John Bosco!
