Fr John Murphy [senior] farewelled with a Requiem Mass

On 5th May, the Salesian College Sunbury’s chapel was filled to its capacity to farewell Fr John Murphy [Senior] who passed away on Sunday 30th April 2017. Family members, many close friends, Salesians, Salesian Sisters, Salesian Co-operators, and past pupils joined in at the Requiem Mass led by the Provincial, Fr Greg Chambers SDB. Fr John Murphy was two weeks short of 93.

Fr Greg welcomed and thanked the faithful who participated in the Mass, and acknowledged those who sent in their apologies. During the Mass, Fr Frank Freeman gave the homily describing the man as a hardworking and dedicated Salesian priest of Don Bosco for the poor. The Salesian seminarians led the choir during the Eucharist.

After the communion, Fr Bernie Graham, led the Final Commendations. Following the Eucharist, the casket of Fr John Murphy was processed down to the cemetery in the college ground. A large number of well-disposed students formed the Guard of Honour from the doors of the chapel to the gates of the cemetery during the procession. As it has been, the Guard of Honour always is an impressive respect given to a Salesian in their final journey.

A student of Fr John Murphy, Fr Peter Varengo SDB, led the burial rite at the cemetery. At conclusion, the Rector of Salesian College Community, Fr Will Matthews SDB, invited all guests to enjoy a light lunch together in the Rupertswood Mansion.

It was a fitting farewell to man who had done so much for the good of the poor in his unique way.

May he rest in peace, amen!
