On Friday 5th January 2018 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Satau village in Savii Samoa, the family members, friends and Salesians gathered for a Eucharist to witness the priestly ordination of Reverend Tuia Afoa SDB. Tuia was ordained by Archbishop Alapati of Samoa in his native village.
The traditional reconciliation ceremony at the beginning of the Eucharist was truly moving. Tuia, being surrounded by his mother and father, knelt under a fine Samoan mat while the congregation sang ‘Lord, have mercy.’
The newly appointed Provincial of the Australia-Pacific Province, Fr Will Matthews SDB, presented Tui for ordination to the Archbishop before the homily during Mass. The archbishop in his homily encouraged Tuia to believe in the power of the Holy Spirit and not to be afraid of the ministry he is called to do.
At the end of the Eucharist, Fr Tuia expressed his thanks particularly to God, to the archbishop who ordained him, his blood family and the Salesian family, many friends from Samoa, Fiji and Australia for their presence.
Fr Tuia’s first appointment as a Salesian Priest is in Alafua Community in Samoa is looking after the pre-novices, community’s finance, assisting at Don Bosco Technical Centre and the Salesian parishes on the weekend.
Congratulations Fr Tuia Afoa SDB on your priestly ordination and your ministry in Samoa.
