The annual Province Day was celebrated at the Salesian Retreat Centre in Lysterfield, Victoria on Saturday 5th July. The day began with a communal Eucharist presided over by the provincial, Fr Greg Chambers SDB. As customary, the Province Day 2014 was held at the end of an annual retreat at Lysterfield, and many Salesians were able to be part of this celebration. On the sanctuary, the provincial was con-celebrated by four Salesian priests who celebrate different jubilees in 2014.
Province day is a day to acknowledge, honour and celebrate Salesians whose jubilee occur in the year. The jubilarians 2014 are Fr Peter Hoang [25 years as Salesian], Fr Peter Rankin and Fr Bernie Graham [25 years as Salesian priests], Fr Chris Riley [40 years as Salesian], Fr Elio Capra [50 years as Salesian], Fr Germano Baiguini [40 years as Salesian priest], Fr Norman Ford [50 years as Salesian priest], Fr. James Adayadiel, Fr Lionel Henry, Fr Brian Diamond [60 years as Salesians & 50 years as Salesian priests], and Br Silvio Quaranta [70 years as Salesian].
Following the Eucharist, a special meal was served in the retreat centre dining room in honour of the jubilarians. Fr Jim Acreman was the master of ceremony.
At the request of the provincial and on behalf of the province, Fr Will Matthews gave a speech during dinner to honour all jubilarians highlighting their contributions to the Salesian Family, to the youth, and to the Church. Having had eleven jubilarians to talk about, the speech was cut into two parts, and presented in a lively way. At the end of the speech, Fr Will proposed the toast to all jubilarians.
On behalf of the jubilarians, Fr Peter Hoang replied to the toast. He thanked all Salesians for their support, encouragement and family spirit experienced.
Presently, Fr Michael Cunningham from the UK is in Australia to preach all retreats in various parts of the province. It is his second time to preach retreats to the Salesians in Australia and the Pacific.
