The Myanmar Catholic Community Melbourne hosted a pre-Christmas celebration at Salesian College in Sunbury on Saturday 23rd December 2017. It was attended by a large number of Myanmar Catholics from Melbourne and Wagga Wagga.
The day began with some fun games in the Lakeside stadium led by a Franciscan Sister, Sr Patricia, and Fr Will Matthews. Many children participated in the spirit of St. John Bosco, enjoying both in competing, and receiving prizes.
Many different ethnic communities brought a variety of exotic dishes to share at lunch time where all participants enjoyed enormously. Following lunch, Christmas carols and concerts were held in the stadium. The outgoing & unofficial chaplain to the Myanmar communities, Fr Will Matthews SDB, was thanked for his contributions to the Myanmar families in Melbourne and beyond.
Two Burmese Salesian clerics from Don Bosco House in Clifton Hill, and two other Burmese seminarians from Corpus Christi Seminary in Carlton also participated actively in the games, singing and music.
The festive day was concluded with a Eucharist led by Fr Will Matthews SDB, and con-celebrated by Fr Khia Mang from Hakha diocese in Myanmar, and Fr Eugene San the Provincial Superior of the Pallottines in Australia.
The Myanmar Catholic communities are growing bigger each year and becoming a promising future for the Catholic Church in Australia.
In 2018, Fr Lucas Kyaw Myint of Pathein Diocese in Burma, will take on the role of chaplain to the Myanmar communities in Melbourne. Fr Lucas will be based at Our Lady’s Church in Sunshine where a monthly Burmese Mass is celebrated on every second Sunday of the month at 3:00 PM.
