The ceremony took place during a celebration of the Eucharist led by Fr David O’Malley, vice-Provincial and Rector of the community in Bollington. In the introduction he spoke of Saint Martin, who shared his cloak with a poor man.

In the homily he referred to Elijah, who passed on his cloak to his successor, Elisha, and Don Bosco who passed on the leadership of the Salesian Congregation to Don Rua. You can read or download the homily from here.

A central part of the ceremony was the reading of the Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity and the signing of the document from the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez, who made the appointment. Fr Michael Winstanley, the outgoing Provincial, signed as the delegate of the Rector Major.

Also present at the Mass were two former Provincials of the Great Britain Province, Fr George Williams and Fr Francis Preston. The Provincial of Austria, Fr Rudolf Osanger, was also able to attend during his short holiday in the United Kingdom.
