Xavier College in Gawler, South Australia, has raised almost sixteen thousand dollars for the Project Compassion this year. The generosity of the students, families and staff is truly mind-blowing! Following is the letter written by David Smith thanking all for such massive generosity.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the entire Xavier College Community for their overwhelming response to this year’s Project Compassion campaign over the Lenten Season. As a school community we raised a staggering $15,838.50.
The Project Compassion theme for this year was ‘blueprint for a better world’ and I believe this is what actually happened here at our school. The students learnt particularly through their Oratories that Project Compassion is not just about raising money, but educating and encouraging our Australian community to stand in solidarity with people who are living in poverty.
The students as a whole really seemed to take this to heart this year, as the giving over the entire six weeks from all Houses never waned and was inspiring. The student’s response was truly amazing.
The countless stories I was privileged to hear from proud Oratory teachers talking about their students who had regularly donated their pocket money, or who had happily handed over money earned from after school jobs, and others who gave up ‘birthday money from Grandma’, while some others had collected cans and bottles and donated the refund proceeds, some even put some subtle pressure on their parents to donate to the cause….and then there were the majority of our students that simply and anonymously just put in whatever money they had spare in “the little box”, without seeking any public recognition or fan fare.
Now that Project Compassion has come to an end for another year…. you and your family may be wondering what you can do to keep making a difference in our world?
Later this term we will be running our annual St. Vincent de Paul Society Can drive and in third term we will be raising awareness and money for the Salesian Missions including the Salesians in Haiti.
