Reflection: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The 15th August is traditionally marked by the Catholic Church to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a celebration of the Mother of God to recognize her commitment and dedication in the plan of God. Mary has accepted the Word of God in absolute faith and brought forth Jesus into the world and raised him as a mother.

Jesus came into the world to do the will of God that is to save the humanity from the darkness of sinfulness and suffering. He has come to give us a new and purposeful life through loving God and our neighbors.

Mary too carried out the will of God. She accepted God in her life. She had the honour of giving birth to Jesus. She raised him and being with him in his ministry. She was there at the foot of the cross when Jesus drew his last breath. To put it simply, Mary journeyed with Jesus from birth to death.

Mary was faithful to the call from God. She accepted God’s will in deep humility. For such participation, Mary now enjoys the highest honour in the Catholic Church, before God and before humanity.

Like Mary, we are called to accept the Word of God in humility and bring it out as a reality in our life so that one day we may enjoy the eternal happiness with her and all the saints in heaven.

St. John Bosco, who was born on 16th August 1815, honoured Mary as his own mother and in his work with young people. He now wants us to be with Jesus like Mary: accept Him, and live with Him even to the foot of the cross.

I hope and pray that you all be blessed and protected by the maternal care of Mary, the mother of us all in this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen!
