A brief but touching ceremony was held in the community Chapel at St Joseph’s College in Ferntree Gully on Monday 15 February. The community most recently resided in the residence (Fr. Joe Binh, Br. Mick Harris and Fr. Jim Carroll) are now all safely housed elsewhere (Fr. Joe and Br. Mick at Lysterfield and Fr. Jim retiring at Maryville).
They gathered in with the community from Lysterfield and a representation from the College, Mr. Vin Feeney (Principal) and Mrs. Jenny Keating (Administration) who has been a strong support for the Salesian community for decades. Fr. Provincial was also blessed to be present at this closing ceremony.
The brief ceremony was highlighted by a steady and solemn reading of the names of almost 50 Salesians, past and present, living and dead, who have served the Lord at Ferntree Gully, and who have prayed daily in that Chapel.
Fr. Joe also reflected briefly on the significance of the Salesians at Ferntree Gully, and we all asked the Lord that He might give us hands that will continue to work in that corner of his vineyard.
It was a fitting way to close our Salesian presence in the Residence. It will now house the music department of St Joseph’s College. I am sure Don Bosco would be happy with the “prayers” that will be raised in the new music centre!
The evening ended with an excellent final “community meal” provided by Fr. Joe Binh and his faithful helpers.
Nevertheless, Salesians will continue to work in St. Joseph’s College while residing at Lysterfield, and the spirit of Don Bosco will continue on in the college community.
