Many friends, parishioners, religious, and Salesians gathered at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Clifton Hill for the diaconate ordination of Br Abilio and Br Laurenco of East Timor and Br Anusit of Thailand in the evening on Saturday 2nd December 2017.
The Eucharist was officiated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, surrounded by three Provincials: Fr Greg Chambers of Australian-Pacific Province, Fr John Bosco Dhepharat Pitisan of Thai Province, and Fr Apolinario Maria Neto of East Timor & Indonesian Province. Additionally, they were con-celebrated by many Salesians from Melbourne, and 2 deacons.
During his homily, Archbishop Timothy emphasised the candidates on finding the full meaning of life in Christ amidst all demands and temptations of this world. He continued that the Salesian life that is a life of Service and Communion, servants to God’s people, witnesses of Christ and His Good News in and to the world. Deacons are the living sacraments who play an essential role in the mystery of Christ, they are to serve but not to be served, bringing the presence of Christ to His people. Archbishop also encouraged the deacons to be ordained to be like John the Baptist, who points out and brings people to Christ “that He must increase and I must decrease”. In serving people they will find the meaning and the fulfilment of life, Archbishop concluded.
At the conclusion of the Eucharist and on behalf of the newly ordained deacons, Rev. Laurenco expressed words of thanks to God, to their parents and families, the Salesian Congregation, the respective Provincials and all Salesians who formed and helped them in their various stages of formation.
After Mass, refreshments were served in the school hall of the parish. Newly deacons also cut a special cake prepared for them.
Breaking away from the traditional Litany of the Saints, a new Litany of the Saints composed by Br Jeff Miller was introduced in this ordination. Well done to Br Jeff!
In spite of heavy rain and storm many people came and celebrated with these three new deacons testifying how much they love God and His ministers.
Please continue to pray for the three new deacons: Rev. Abilio, Rev. Anusit and Rev Laurenco.
