On the evening of Tuesday 14 December and the morning of 15 December, the Chinese Catholic Community of Melbourne, Salesians of the Australia-Pacific Province, our Sisters, friends, and others who had known and loved Peter Tsang, gathered for the solemn liturgical farewells at the Parish Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Wattle Park, and “Rupertswood,” Sunbury.
Peter’s remains are with us in our cemetery at “Rupertswood.” The number of people who attended, Bishops, other Chinese clergy, Salesians and large crowds from the Chinese community, and the obvious affection that everyone had for this fine Priest and Salesian, were wonderful testimonies to his life and ministry here in Australia.Almost simultaneously, the Eucharist was being celebrated in his memory in Hong Kong.
Peter came to Australia already an experienced Priest in 1992, after serving in Macau and Hong Kong as a teacher and a Parish Priest from 1969 until 1992. He had studied Theology with a large group of Australians in Salerno from 1963 till 1969.
We lament the loss of Peter, and share our heartfelt condolences and gratitude with his family (several of whom were able to be part of our farewells), the Salesian Province of China, and the Chinese Catholic Community.
We would also like to express our thanks to Fr. John Papworth who attended Peter in his last weeks, along with members of the Chinese Community, and both Fr. John and Fr. Kelly Kam who cared for all the details surrounding his final farewells.
