The Conference for the Salesian Youth Ministry delegates from East Asia and Oceania was held at the Salesian Retreat Centre in Lysterfield, a south eastern suburb of Melbourne, from 10th to 13th November.
The participants came from Australia, Burma, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Italy, the PNG, Thailand and the Philippines. The Conference was led by Fr Fabio Attard, the General Councillor for Youth Ministry, and his team from Rome.
Fr Vaclav Klement also joined in this meeting in the first three days.
In his opening address, Fr Fabio stressed that the youth are the main mission of the Salesian Society. He said the existence of the Salesian Society will be meaningless without our ministry to the youth.
Talks and discussions were the main features of the conference in addition to prayer and liturgical moments. Meal times were memorable as the Salesians from all different countries shared their experiences with each other. On Wednesday afternoon, all delegates were taken a tour to St Joseph’s College in Ferntree Gully, St Patrick’s Cathedral in East Melbourne, Don Bosco Youth Centre and Hostel in Brunswick, and a walk around the Federation Square in the heart of Melbourne. Later in the evening, they all shared a happy dinner together at a restaurant in South Bank, a river side precinct of the Yarra.
On the last day of the meeting, Fr Fabio thanked all participants for their work and contributions, and the host nation and the Salesian community at Lysterfield for their hospitality. During the final meal, all participants enjoyed a special meal with a very special menu item, the Kangaroo meat.
The Conference for Salesian Youth Ministry Delegates is held annually.
