Embracing the wild outdoors of Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup, 106 young people and 40 volunteer leaders from around Perth embarked on the annual Salesian camp, held from 10 to 14 January 2022.
Mass was held on Monday to ensure that the camp began in the best way possible! Father Hyginus Ebede set the tone for the camp with his homily, speaking about the call young people have received: to be the heart and hands of Christ; keeping Jesus alive in the world ‘today, through us.’
Activities throughout the camp included a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities, to exercise the mind, the body and build rapport among the campers. There were so many fun challenges, but some favourites included swimming in the nearby river, amazing race, bush walks, arts & crafts, gold rush, mini Olympics and capture the flag!
Archery lessons give young people to try out something they usually only see on the silver screen!
“Everyone is at different stages in their faith life and sometimes fighting battles/challenges that others may not even know about. The two Masses and subtle evangelisa ion throughout the week through our Salesian Good Nights (started by St Don Bosco himself) remind our campers that they are not alone but part of a larger family – the Salesian family,” camp coordina or Graham Maher explained.
The environment of this faith-based camp for young teenagers “creates a safe space for our campers and provides a temporary escape from the demands and challenges that they may face in their day-to-day lives” he added.
The combination of all the fun and games with this welcoming environment fostered by Salesian love, keeps the campers engaged throughout all of the camp. The Nanga camp is located in an incredibly beautiful bushland area, allowing the young people to connect with mother nature and truly enjoy a refreshing break.
There's not too much better than a freshwater swim on a hot summer day!
The camp concluded with a second liturgy on Thursday, which focused on the infinite love that Jesus has for us – which is why when challenges or tough times come our way, God is always there for us.
Established in 1989, the WA Young Salesians have been operating in Perth for 33 years following the teachings of Don Bosco.
